Homesickness … seems to be enjoying my hospitality

September 4th, 2008

I got a voice mail this morning on my phone from Eliza’s pre-K teacher. She said that they were doing something special for Grandparents’ Day tomorrow and that Eliza had told her she didn’t have any grandparents. Her sweet teacher called to see if that was accurate.

Eliza has four grandparents and two great-grandparents. Seriously. She does.

But they all live several states away, and she sees them - at most! - once or twice a year. Mike talks to his dad every few weeks, but the kids never talk to them on the phone. My folks and grandparents call me once a week like clockwork. Sometimes Eliza or Griff says hello, but not always.

So it’s perfectly understandable that she might not remember them immediately. But how heartbreaking is that?! On the eve of Grandparents’ Day, my daughter didn’t think she had any.

Homesickness is still hanging out with me. We’re having a fine time together.

((hugs)) James has the same issue with my parents. Although we live in town with Lee’s parents. It just makes me sad that he doesn’t really know my family.
However in our case MY parents moved away!

I’m the girl who left. The only one, in fact. And it is hard to be away from my family, for my kids to not know them. I’m pretty sure that if my brother were to walk into my house tomorrow, my Eliza wouldn’t know who he is. How pitiful is that?
