One more day…

July 17th, 2008

Till the Monk/Psych premiere night. I am so excited. Not only is tomorrow Friday (which means Chick Fil A breakfast), but it’s a groovy tv night. And we’re having Josh’s BBQ Steak and Rice. He sent me the recipe tonight, and I’m going to follow it exactly. Except, you know, where he said to use steak. I’m thinking chicken. Or where he said to use the Hickory Brown Sugar sauce. I’m thinking not a sweet sauce. But you know, exactly how he said to do it.

And we’re gonna do a long-distance M/P night. How groovy is that? I’m thinking we’ll all have to take pictures. I’ll post some on Saturday.

Dr. Horribles Sing-Along Blog

July 15th, 2008

Ok, so I’ve mentioned my Buffy love, right? For those of you who haven’t seen it, I first began watching because the dialouge was just so fabulous. Witty and sharp. And I love some well-written lines.

Joss Whedon wrote “Buffy”, and as it turns out, he also penned “Serenity,” “Firefly,” “Angel” and … ready, “Toy Story.” He’s directed episodes of “The Office,” and did a guest appearance on “Veronica Mars.” How could you not love this man?

This week, he’s releasing a short mini-series (like less than an hour short) on his blog. It’s got all sorts of groovy stars & it’s a musical. The musical episode of “Buffy” was one of my favorites! I have the soundtrack. :)

You can try to download it at the Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog website, but it’s gotten so many hits that the server crashed earlier today. Or you could just go to itunes and pay your $1.99 to download it right away. The first episode was available today, and two more will be available tomorrow and Thursday. I’m going to download them all and save them for the weekend when I can watch them all at once.

Cable Confessions

July 10th, 2008

Yesterday, I wrote about how I love tv. I failed to mention that I also love cable. Or that I think cable is a basic utility like water and electricity. Or how I cannot imagine life without a dvr.

That would probably explain why so much of my viewing is on cable, especially in the summertime. Who doesn’t love that cable shows new shows in the vast tv wasteland that is summertime?! This week and next are the big summertime series openers, and I’m all excited. Here’s what we’ll be watching at Chez Chel in the next few weeks.

Tonight, “Burn Notice” begins its second season (in about seven minutes, to be exact). I didn’t watch it last summer, but USA put it on one day a week or so ago as a marathon, and Mike and I have been watching all week getting ready for tonight’s episode.

Next Wednesday, “Project Runway” starts its fifth season. I adore this show. Seriously. And I love that so many people at work watch it, too, so we get to discuss it the next day. It airs at 10 p.m. (EST) on Bravo.

And next Friday, oh, next Friday. It’s the “Monk”/”Psych” night. Griff’s excited about that one, too. For those of you who don’t know, Monk’s amazing and funny and fun and delightful. And Psych makes me laugh so hard I think I’ll spit Diet Coke. USA scored with that combination. And you know, right, that the cutie patootie who plays Gus also played Bud on “The Cosby Show?” How could you not like that?

So, with those shows and all of the Astros games, we’re pretty booked.

Small Screen Memories

July 9th, 2008

Ok, I love me some tv. I admit it. I’m not a mom who tells her children television is bad. How could I, given how much I watch? Ok, so you get it, right? I love tv. I have fond memories that involve tv.

My friend, LeeAnn, and I used to watch scary movies when we were teenagers, and then we’d be so scared we couldn’t go to the kitchen alone. I never think of “Nightmare on Elm Street” without thinking about her and her parents’ house… some cold pizza and a Coke. (And yes, I know it wasn’t a tv show, but we watched it on a tv, ok?)

My friend, Mika, and I lived together for years in college, and we learned the fine art of compromise through tv. I liked “Guiding Light,” and she liked “Days of our Lives,” so we taped and watched both. Each of our grandmothers watched those shows, and we had a family history there. We also watched every episode of “Twin Peaks” together.

When I was pregnant with Griff, I watched reruns of “Boy Meets World” every afternoon after work while I waited for Mike to get home. He’d arrive to find me sobbing to the show. He just shook his head, and now it’s the family joke that I get all weepy when BMW is on.

When Mike was traveling home in rural Mississippi on Tuesday nights, he would call me to talk after his doctoral classes. I’d talk for a while but then have to tell him I had to go because Ozzy couldn’t figure out how to get the trashbag in the can or he was about to throw a ham at his neighbors & I couldn’t miss it.

I spent seven years in front of the television every Tuesday night watching “Buffy.” The first season it wasn’t on, I couldn’t figure out what to do with my Tuesday evenings.

Mandy and I watched “Trading Spaces” for years, laughing at how we could sign up since we lived next door to one another. Inevitably either Mike or Josh would point out that we’d cheat and tell the other what was going on and that I’d never make it… that I’d cave and complain about the work.

Mike and I have watched the Astros on Fox Sports Southwest for years. We got satellite when we moved here for the specific purpose of seeing the games. Griff took his first steps during the last game the Astros played in the Astrodome. We were watching.

My friend, Linda, and I laughed and laughed about a quote in our local paper one morning at work, and she submitted it to Leno’s Headlines, and it ran! I was so excited the night I saw Jay Leno holding up Linda’s highlighted newspaper column. (It’s now a bit of urban lore… I’m pretty sure you’ve seen it in one forwarded email or another.)

Here in Florida, lots of folks speak Spanish. When someone at work asks if I do, I tell them that I learned all of my Spanish from Dora.

I like nothing more than crawling into bed and watching a marathon of some groovy tv show with Mike. I like that last season’s “Project Runway” brought me closer with several people at work that I wouldn’t have really known otherwise.

Recently, in an effort to cut back some to afford gas, I let my TV Guide subscription lapse. It wasn’t easy. Still isn’t. I once submitted a question to TV Guide Online, and Matt Roush - THE MATT ROUSH, TV GURU - emailed me back. Seriously, I have an email from Matt Roush. Still makes me a little atwitter thinking about it.

I have favorite shows that Griff watches… shows that I hate that Eliza watches… shows that I obsess about. I love tv.

When I started this, I think I meant to tell you the shows I’m currently adoring, but I got off track. Maybe tomorrow I’ll tell you about my faves for the moment. Until then, go and watch something. Tonight’s the last night of So You Wanna Be An Old Supermodel. Enjoy.

Odds and ends… or killing time till I can go to bed

June 12th, 2008

Here are a few random things… I’m way too tired to write much. We’re all playing Wii, and I’m essentially waiting for it to get dark enough to send Eliza to bed.

** It’s been a long and tiring week at work, but I feel really good about the work I’ve done. It feels like I’m doing so much better, like I understand things so much better. Of course, I worry that I’m wrong & just misguided. But I find that people ask me questions as if they assume I’ll know the answer. That’s such a big compliment to me, and yet, I worry these people are falsely placing their trust in me. I have to meet with my supervisor tomorrow to discuss all of my claims that I can’t figure out what to do with or have messed up or both. That’ll bring me back to reality, I’m sure. But maybe, just maybe, I really am getting better. Wouldn’t that be cool?

** I’m now loving So You Wanna Be an Old Supermodel on TVLand. I think it’s got a classier name, but come on, that’s what it is. Mike said last night that the women on it are meaner the the women on other reality shows… they don’t seem to bond like they do on Idol or Project Runway. Well, honey, these women are old. They don’t have time to bond. This is their last shot at this thing. They’ve got friends at home. They want to win. I think it should tide me over till Project Runway comes back next month.

** Griff watches too much tv. I know because I love tv. I’m so excited about the summer shows, I can hardly stand it.

** I’ve been praying. I know that if you haven’t been reading my blog for long, that probably sounds odd. But for those of you who’ve been with me through this journey of moving and being angry at God and then thinking God was angry with me and then being a bit ambivalent, well, it’s a good thing to be praying and feeling that warmth and connection that comes from that.

** There was super response to my Swap Me, Sell Me, Chai Me. I have a couple pieces left if anyone didn’t play the first time and wants to jump in now.

Now, I’m thinking I’ll go slather my LUSH Sacred Truth on my face and try to scare Eliza into bed. If it doesn’t work, I’ll at least have smooth skin.
